You don’t have to journey alone
I’m Shawn
According to my title, I’m a registered psychotherapist, and I specialize in treating mental health and relationship issues for individuals, couples, families. And I have a special interest in supporting church leaders with the unique challenges they face.
It’s important to find a therapist that is a good fit for you. Let me share a few things about me to help you decide if we’re a good fit.
Shawn Groen, MDiv, RP
Main client concerns that I work with all the time
Relationship issues, family or church family conflict, anxiety and panic, trauma, stress and burnout, church hurt, low self-worth, guilt and shame, life and family transitions, and pornography addictions. This isn’t a complete list of things I can help you with, but they are the concerns I enjoy helping with the most.
About my personality
When we meet, you’ll discover a few things about me: I'm down-to-earth and relatable. I'm not afraid to work hard with you. I'm warm, kind and calming. I’m only a moment away from a good laugh and finding humour in the darkness of life.
Two main specialties that I think I do pretty well
First, I work extensively with individuals, couples and families using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). This is an evidence-based model and first-line treatment for addressing relationship and attachment related issues. When you feel discouraged and disoriented in your relationships it often comes as a deep relief to knowing that I have a road map and a plan for your healing.
Second, I love to work with pastors, clergy and church leaders. I’ve noticed a profound need for treatment and support for church leaders. People involved in church ministry are often isolated from their communities as a result of their position, and I’ve developed insights into the unique struggles they face and enjoy working through those issues. You can prevent burnout, and re-learn to like the people you serve.
Outside the office
Like you, I’m more than my career, and I have many interests that keep me busy outside of therapy. I’m a husband and dad to four kiddos. I produce maple syrup every spring. I’m always looking for my next opportunity for a morning run—rain or shine or snow. I love to read, play the piano, and—believe it or not—I’m a small engine mechanic by trade.
I’m John
I am a Master’s student in the last stretch of my coursework before graduation. I specialize in relational and mental health concerns for individuals, and it’s a privilege to venture with you as we overcome the impasses in your life.
As someone with several cross-cultural experiences while living in an inter-cultural marriage, it’s easy for me to relate to people from various backgrounds. I can offer counselling in English and Portuguese.
About me
While I’m newer to psychotherapy, I’m no stranger to supporting people through their hurt and pain. As a pastor, I have a huge heart to see church members and church leaders find holistic health. I understand what it means to “go to battle” every day to become more dependent on God and his design for healthy living. Whether it be relationship issues, pornography addictions, church hurt, insecurity, anxiety or depression, I am ready to go the extra mile to help you experience a life full of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23) which in turn honours the Lord. Healthy holistic living—spiritually, mentally, and bodily—is what I personally work at daily and have a desire to help others with.
What am I like as a therapist?
When we have the opportunity to work together, you will find that I am caring and easy to talk with. As someone who has walked through some stretching and life-transforming situations, I can offer a gentle-hearted safe place and clarity to help get you through the storm. I also appreciate a good laugh at the right moment.
Outside the office
I have many interests that keep me active. I am a husband in a cross-cultural marriage with three children (and one on the way!) that make my life adventurous and exciting. I enjoy watching and playing hockey, but I love playing many different types of sports. I play the drums. And, I also teach English online to children across the globe.
